The Global Virtual Scout Camp on the Air and the Internet
Qatar Scouts and Guides Association (Scouts Section) participated in the Global Scout Camp virtually through the airwaves and the internet in the 66th Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) and the 27th Jamboree on the Internet (JOTI). This collaboration took place in conjunction with the Qatar Amateur Radio Society at their headquarters. Qatari Scouts engaged with their brothers and friends from around the world during this event from yesterday until the twentieth of this month.
JOTA is an official global event of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, where scouts from various ages and different countries connect through amateur radio stations worldwide. The goal is to facilitate and encourage global communication among scouts, providing them with an educational and enjoyable scouting experience and reinforcing their sense of belonging to the worldwide scouting movement.
Globally coordinated by a specialized team under the World Scout Committee, JOTA, and JOTI take place every year during the third weekend of October. The event dates back to the early 20th century, gaining popularity among scouts who were fascinated by radio. The first JOTA was held in 1958.
The virtual camp offers an opportunity for Qatari Scouts to understand the importance of communication in humanitarian service, and the role of amateur radio and the Internet in representing their country. Participants engage in activities such as raising the flag, reciting the scout law, and singing the national anthem. The event includes lectures on the history and types of communication.
The event was attended by Mr. Jassim Mohammed Al Hardan, the Commissioner General of the Qatar Scouts and Guides Association, Dr. Ahmed Hamad Al-Muhannadi, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Amateur Radio Society, and Mr. Sabaan Al Jassem, a member of the Amateur Radio Society. Also present were scout leaders including Ahmed Khamees Al Yousuf, Mona Al Mansouri, Hazem Naji, Yaqoob Al Tamimi, and Khaled Al Hittmi, along with a group of trainers and technicians from the association. It's worth mentioning that the Qatar Amateur Radio Society has been participating in the official international event of the World Organization of the Scout Movement for sixteen consecutive years, represented by members of the board of directors and several society members.
